Elaine and Tom Vacations

We did the week at Sunset Waters in Curacao that Castaways set up.  Sunset Waters is usually an all-inclusive family resort, but relatively new owners and management decided they would work with Castaways on an all-adult week to see how it went.

It went fine.

The resort is about 80 rooms, situated on a cliff with a walk down to a large curved beach.  For this week only the resort and the beach were clothing optional.  Normally there is a very small area of the beach that is a nude beach, and thus the resort's claim of having the only nude beach on Curacao.

The resort itself has a large dining area that accommodated the sold out crowd easily.  Most meals were buffet, with the exception of lunches where there was a daily menu.  The beach has its own bar and grill (grill is for lunches).

Curacao is a Dutch island, although you might think you were in Baja CA from the landscape.  Even though it rains more often than Baja, the overall feeling you have is dryness.  You also will do fine with speaking Spanish as the local language is heavily influenced by Spanish, and many of the employees are imported from Spanish speaking countries.

Being Dutch all citizens of Curacao have the advantage of being afforded the benefits of the Netherlands.  Which means that with a 70% tax rate, there are high social benefits.  We heard on two occasions from local residents that the welfare allotments for those who don't work are effectively the same as working a minimum wage job, rendering many of the local population to opt out of the workforce.

The island is having a tough time economically and whereas the capital of Willemstad is quite picturesque, the shopping has become pretty much curio and tourist trinket oriented.  We did hear from couples that had visited as recently as 3 years ago on cruise ships that at one time there were some very nice higher end stores with reasonable prices, but these have all vacated.  The resort does have a daily free shuttle into Willemstad, thereby avoiding what we heard was an expensive ($50) taxi fare.

The weather was excellent.  Highs in low 90's and lows in the 80's.  Some sprinkles each day, with a constant trade wind.

No bugs.

The resort staff was excellent and worked extremely hard to grant everyone's wishes.  The manager, Jim Hunter, was onsite constantly and always hovering to make sure things went smoothly.

Each night had a different theme in the resort.  There was no pressure to participate, and the themes were very low key.  Nothing to be embarrass anybody.

Elaine of course starred on Karaoke night.

There were a number of tours set up by the resort, and a number of guests took advantage of these.  We aren’t tour people, so we can’t comment on what the best tours were.

Should the resort go all-adult in the future, or if only on the occasional one week special, we would recommend giving it a try.
